At the end of the screening there will be a panel dealing
with the ethical issues arising from the interaction between documenter and
documented, and the exploitation that takes place as part of the act of documentation.
The directors of the film Daniel Fallshaw & Violeta Ayala will participate via video conference from Australia
Even today, in the age of increasing awareness to the "politics of the
gaze" – we can still see an ethical blurring between the redemption intent
on the part of the documenter (white, western) and the constant threat that exists
as part of his control of the gaze on the "other" and its products –
the recordings, the filmed testimonies.
The viewers are made not to be just witnesses but a jury
deciding on the verdict to be given in relation to the intention of the
documenter. In addition, the panel will ask questions about slavery that still
exists in refugee camps around the world and the social and moral role of
documentary films in this respect.
Participants: Dr. Shmulik Duvdevani, Prof. Judd Ne'eman, Daniel Fallshaw & Violeta Ayala
