He hides behind the camera and says nothing. Curious strangers see him in the street. Embarrassed, some try to start a conversation; others move away. Yet others see him standing on their doorstep. When they open the door, he remains silent, and his silence evokes anger, laughter, discomfort—but also the desire to come closer and be vulnerable, and a kind of intriguing intimacy that may or may not be one-sided. Guido Hendrikx, whose film Stranger in Paradise had been screened here at Docaviv, explores our responses to otherness, to that which we don’t understand. With characteristic sophistication, he asks which reflection we wish to see in the other’s eyes.
