Tina Turner did what few women had ever managed to do: the queen of R&B crossed over and became a celebrated rock singer, filling stadiums with over 100 thousand fans. She achieved all this while living a life of pain and humiliation at the hands of a violent husband. At first, filled with shame and self-loathing, she did everything she could to keep it a secret, but as she grew stronger and more confident, she began to talk, and then, finally, she acted. Setting herself free, Turner built a new life for herself with her own two hands. In a film that features beautiful sequences from her concerts, Turner talks with heartwarming honesty about her childhood, the violence she experienced, her Buddhism, and the tremendous strength and resilience that made her a musical and personal inspiration to many.
