When her daughter Laura, a teenager with special needs, gets pregnant, Vicenta goes to war for her right to an abortion. The means at her disposal are scant: an illiterate single mom in Argentina, Vicenta makes a living cleaning houses. Despite all that, she takes on doctors, the entire healthcare system, lawyers, and, in the end, politicians too. They all try to play her, but Vicenta is relentless.
Director Darío Doria tells the story of Vicenta’s struggle—which made it all the way to the UN and caused a seismic shift in public opinion—using Plasticene models. The captivating animation is a painstakingly accurate portrayal of Vicenta’s feelings as she navigates a bureaucratic maze—and emerges victorious.
