Donna Summer had so many faces that she herself admitted she did not always recognize them all. The singer who changed the world of pop with her sexy hit “Love to Love You Baby” (born of her idea) grew up surrounded by talented singers but dreamed of becoming a superstar and never stopped coming up with musical innovations. Her daughter Brooklyn, who co-directed the film, tries to unravel the tangled threads of her mother’s persona—a mother who seldom dared to show weakness, and whose daughters always found her room locked. In previously unseen home videos, Donna Summer looks energetic, funny, and playful, but interviews with Summer, her romantic partners, friends, and relatives tell a story of immense pain that had been thrust upon her because of her enormous talent.
