Take Martin Scorsese’s incredible talent for portraying complex human characters, add David Johansen’s eccentricity and immense talent, throw in his music for good measure, and what do you get? A film you cannot get enough of. Scorsese films Johansen—who rose to fame as the lead singer of the glam punk band “New York Dolls”—at a cabaret-like show at a New York café, where Johansen has the opportunity to demonstrate his full range of performance skills. In character as his stage persona Buster Poindexter, he expertly wields his sharp wit, directing it at himself more often than not. Filmmaker-fan Scorsese provides viewers with very generous clips from the performance, intercut with archive footage and interviews with Johansen to complete his portrait of this multi-talented genre-defying artist.
