Ranjit was not born a hero. He had to become one when three young men raped his 13 year-old daughter, and the people of his village demanded that he marry her off to one of her rapists to remove the stain of shame from the community. But Ranjit refused to abandon his daughter, and instead decided to demand justice. In India, where a rape is reported every 20 minutes and rapists are hardly ever punished, a poor, simple rice farmer choosing to fight back is virtually unheard of. Director Nisha Pahuja followed father and daughter for over a year through the emotional rollercoaster of court appearances and meetings with the rapists’ families. The result is the inspiring, intimate portrait of a man who fought for change against all odds—and won.
