An audiovisual poem dedicated to the pioneers of the Baltic New Wave of the 1960s, filmmakers from Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia who replaced the Soviet dogma of realist propaganda documentaries with a poetic, romantic school of filmmaking that offered a different perspective on people and the environment. Using metaphors, unusual compositions, and symbolism, they operated both within and outside time. In the words of Latvian filmmaker Herz Frank, one of the movement’s leading figures and one of the greatest documentarians of all time: “We film the material world, reality, but we always bear in mind that there’s spirituality too.” In Bridges of Time, a collaboration between Audrius Stonys, a Lithuanian, and Latvian filmmaker Kristine Briede, they revisit the people and places documented in those films, briefly reanimating moments that had been frozen in time.
