Austria 2024, 118 min, German, Hebrew & English subtitles

A close look at a class in Vienna’s largest primary school—a microcosm of the social dynamics in today’s Europe. All the children are first- or second-generation immigrants whose first language is not German, and the values taught in the classroom often clash with what they know from home. Presiding over all of this fragile complexity is Ilkay, a patient teacher who manages to tap into the children’s potential and help them realize it by striking a balance between empathy and firmness. Filmmaker Ruth Beckermann follows the class for three years, offering an original, interesting—and just as importantly, heartwarming—perspective on Austrian society.
