United States / Mexico 2023, 87 min, English and Spanish, Hebrew subtitles

This extraordinary retrospective on painter Frida Kahlo is based on her own words, drawn from her letters, illustrated diary, interviews, and essays. Styled as an immersive first-person exploration of her personal and artistic development, the film takes us through the milestones of her life: the accident that changed her body, the Mexican Revolution, which awakened her inspiration, her role as a (sometimes unwilling) muse for Diego Rivera and Leon Trotsky, her diverse sexual desires and her passion for desire itself, and the way art served as her ultimate declaration of independence. The film masterfully interweaves rare archival footage with animation that brings her works to life, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in the vibrant colors and dramatic scenes she captured with her brushstrokes. This Sundance Film Festival Editing Award winner is an important addition to the legacy of one of history’s most fascinating and influential artists.
