Sébastien Lifshitz (Casa Susanna, Adolescents) is a master of portraiture. In his new film, he carefully and gently crafts the tender portrait of Sylvie Hofmann, who has been a nurse at a hospital’s oncology department for 40 years and is now nearing the drastic life changes that come with retirement. When it comes to end-of-life matters, Lifshitz’s focus, much like his heroine’s, is pain relief. In conversations with her patients, colleagues, husband, and daughter, and in the time she spends beside her fierce octogenarian mother, Sylvie shows all the characteristics of a truly unforgettable persona: She is tough and strong, quick-witted and charismatic, and generous with her love of people and life.
