Ruth was just a teenager when she inherited her mother’s gold medallion, etched with a portrait of Nefertiti. She also inherited the medallion’s story, a harrowing yet hopeful chapter in her family history. Ruth’s mother is a survivor of the Derg totalitarian regime in Ethiopia, a regime that had tyrannized the Ethiopian people at a time that became known as the Red Terror. Ruth’s film – a blend of archival materials and footage of meetings with her relatives – is a testimony of physical and spiritual survival and a testament to an entire culture’s perseverance despite the violence in its history.
