Lithuania / Estonia 2016, 56 min, Lithuanian, Hebrew & English subtitles
Journeying far into the Kazakh portion of the Tian Shan mountains, where a massive glacier looms at 3,500 meters above sea level, we find the portrait of humanity, time, and space. Isolated from civilization for 30 years at a Soviet research station perched high above the world, with only a cat, a dog, and an insatiable curiosity to keep her company, a Lithuanian scientist has dedicated her life to monitoring the Earth’s climate pulse. Stunning shots of her surroundings and day-to-day work are interspersed with archival footage of those who came before her a century ago. The meditative quality of the location blends seamlessly with Audrius Stonys’ signature poetic style: As he captures ravines, stalagmite caves, and rocks falling in slow motion, he shows his profound understanding of their material and sensory essence until he and his camera merge with them organically, becoming one.
