Short film compilation and book launch
To mark the publication of Dr. Shmulik Duvdevani’s book, “The First Modernists: The Rise of Artistic Documentary Filmmaking in Israel,” Docaviv Festival is paying tribute to the groundbreaking filmmakers and films of the Israel Film Service, which has been supporting Israeli documentary filmmaking for seven decades now—since the days of the early “hasbara” films.
At the event, we will screen three of the most important films produced under its auspices.
The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with Managing Director of the Israel Film Service Donna Gobi, Eli Cohen, Yael Perlov, and Dr. Shmulik Duvdevani.
More about the films:
In 1973, musicians who had immigrated to Israel from chilly Eastern European countries found themselves playing in an orchestra in the desert city of Be’er Sheva. The film reveals their inevitable friction with the local culture to the tune of the orchestra’s enchanting performances.
The film offers an intimate portrait of Shmuel Adi, known as Handsome Jimmy, a 29-year-old man who lives in Tel Aviv and is addicted to opiates and other drugs. In his unique speaking style, Jimmy talks candidly about the struggles and loneliness of being an addict.
To the tune of an old music box, David Perlov reflects on the past and present of elderly residents in a Netanya nursing home, showing their humanity as it is, with no embellishments.
